Velocity is Virgin Australia's program and the natural second currency for Australian flyers — the one that keeps Qantas honest. Reward Seats on Virgin Australia metal use published zone tables, and Velocity's partner roster (Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, United, ANA and more) gives its points genuine long-haul and premium-cabin reach despite Virgin sitting outside the big three alliances.

How to earn Velocity Points

Velocity Points come from flying Virgin Australia, a solid set of earning credit cards, the Flybuys supermarket ecosystem (Coles), and transfers from flexible bank currencies. The Flybuys link makes Velocity unusually easy to top up from everyday grocery spend.

How to use Velocity Points

Domestic and trans-Tasman Reward Seats run off Virgin Australia's own zone tables. The real prizes are partner redemptions — Qatar Qsuite business class and Singapore Airlines seats in particular — which are priced on partner-specific tables and often need to be booked by phone rather than online.

Sweet spots

  • Qatar Airways Qsuite business class to Doha and onward to Europe — one of the standout premium redemptions available to Australians.
  • Singapore Airlines awards through the Velocity–KrisFlyer partnership, opening Star-style availability without a KrisFlyer balance.
  • Short domestic Reward Seats on Virgin metal, which sit in the cheapest zones.
  • Pooling points within a household via the Family Pooling feature to reach big redemptions faster.

What to watch

  • Several partner awards can't be booked online and need a call to the Velocity contact centre.
  • Points expire after 24 months of account inactivity — keep earning or redeeming to stay live.
  • Fewer cards earn Velocity directly than earn Qantas, so transfers do more of the heavy lifting.
  • Premium partner award space (especially Qatar) can be scarce and gets snapped up quickly.

Frequently asked

Is Velocity part of an alliance?
No. Velocity isn't a member of oneworld, Star Alliance or SkyTeam. Instead it relies on bilateral partnerships — Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, United, ANA, Air Canada and others — which together give its points wide international reach.
What's the best use of Velocity Points?
For most Australians it's Qatar Airways Qsuite business class to Europe via Doha, or Singapore Airlines awards. Both deliver outstanding premium-cabin value relative to the points and cash required.
Do Velocity Points expire?
They expire after 24 months without any earning or redeeming activity. A single qualifying transaction resets the 24-month window.
