Qantas vs Velocity: which should you collect?

By TravelHacker Editorial·

Last updated

Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Australia's Velocity are the two programs most Australian flyers build first. They work quite differently, and the right one depends on where you fly and how you like to redeem. Here's a structural comparison — not a verdict, because the best choice is personal.

The headline difference

  • Qantas Frequent Flyer is a oneworld program with a fixed Classic Flight Reward chart: the points price for a route band and cabin is published and doesn't move with the cash fare. That predictability is its biggest strength. (Qantas also has dynamically-priced Classic Plus — see fixed vs dynamic pricing.)
  • Velocity is not in an alliance. It redeems on Virgin Australia plus a set of bilateral partners (such as Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and United), so its reach comes from partnerships rather than a single alliance.

Network and reach

  • Qantas gives you the broad oneworld network on its points — useful for the Americas (via partners), Europe (via the Middle East and Asia), and domestic Australia.
  • Velocity shines on Virgin Australia's domestic network and on specific partner sweet spots. Its partner list is the thing to study before committing.

Earning

Both have deep credit-card support in Australia. Many cards earn Qantas Points or Velocity Points directly; others earn a flexible currency you can transfer in. Compare the best cards for Qantas and best cards for Velocity, and check whether a card is worth its fee with the card-value calculator.

So which one?

  • Choose Qantas if you value a predictable, fixed chart and want broad oneworld access.
  • Choose Velocity if Virgin Australia's network and its partner sweet spots match your travel, or you want a second program to diversify.

Many frequent flyers collect both and move points where the best seat appears. There's no need to pick just one.
