Four things to keep separate

A Qantas balance cannot simply be added to a Velocity balance. A bank currency may transfer to one or both, but the ratio and account edition matter. Use the transfer path finder to keep source points and airline points separate.
Start with a real trip
Write down your departure airport, destination, number of travellers and flexible dates. Search the whole party together. Price the return independently; it may use a different program or have different cash charges.
For example, suppose your hypothetical outbound costs 40,000 points and the return costs 55,000 per person. Two adults need 190,000 points, not 80,000. If the award also costs $700 and the cash alternative you would buy is $2,600, the avoided cash cost is $1,900. That is 1 cent per point before positioning expenses. Try the trip-value calculator.
Earn without changing your budget
Start with purchases and travel you already planned. Qantas lists everyday earning partners; each partner has its own eligibility and posting rules. A retailer's higher price, card fee or payment surcharge can outweigh points earned.

Book in the right order
Qantas distinguishes Classic Flight Rewards from other payment options. Read the product label rather than assuming every points price is the same award.
Find the full itinerary, check cash charges and cancellation conditions, then arrange the points. A booking reference is not always proof of ticket issuance: check the ticket confirmation and each traveller. Save the final quote and expiry date in your own records.
