How to transfer points to airline programs in Australia

Flexible bank points are powerful precisely because you don't have to commit them to one airline until you're ready. But transfers are usually one-way and irreversible, so a little planning goes a long way. Here's how to think about moving points to an airline program in Australia.

Start from the booking, not the balance

The biggest mistake is transferring points speculatively. Award seats can be scarce, and once your flexible points become airline miles, you can't move them back. So the order is:

1. Find the award seat first. Confirm there's a saver seat at the price you want.
2. Then transfer exactly what you need (plus a small buffer).
3. Book promptly — held award space can disappear.

How transfers work

A flexible currency (the classic example is American Express Membership Rewards) lists a set of airline and hotel transfer partners, each with a ratio — see transfer ratio in the glossary. A 2:1 ratio means two of your bank points become one airline point, so the effective cost of an award doubles in bank-point terms.

A few things to watch:

• Ratios vary by partner, and they can change. Always confirm the current ratio with your program before you rely on it — we don't publish a ratio we can't source officially.
• Transfer bonuses are limited-time uplifts (e.g. +15%) that make a specific partner temporarily better value. They're worth waiting for if your trip is flexible.
• Transfers aren't always instant. Some post in minutes, others take days — don't cut it fine.
• Minimum transfer amounts apply to some partners.

Which currency should you collect?
