Identify the account before choosing a partner
Open your Australian rewards account and record the program edition, currency and partner shown. A card that earns Qantas or Velocity directly is a different proposition from an MR card. Check the Australian Membership Rewards overview and your card terms together.

Work backwards from a booking
Imagine an award quote needs 80,000 miles and you already have 15,000 in that airline account. Your shortfall is 65,000. At a hypothetical 3:1 transfer, the mathematical requirement is 195,000 bank points before minimums or increments. At 2:1 it is 130,000. The edition is therefore material, not a footnote.
Find the award for all travellers, compare cash charges, then check the transfer path. Do not assume an available seat is held while points move. A speculative transfer can leave you with a balance in a program you no longer need.
Submit and reconcile
Amex's official transfer instructions explain linking a partner account and initiating the transfer. Follow those steps in your own account; TravelHacker never needs your loyalty password or membership number.
Save the request reference and confirm miles actually arrive before ticketing. If the award disappears, compare another date or routing within that program before making another transfer. A flight cancellation does not automatically reverse the original bank-to-airline conversion.
Is flexibility worth the fee?
