Upgrading with points: when it beats booking an award outright

Buy a fare you are willing to fly in if the upgrade fails. An upgrade request is not a confirmed premium-cabin booking. Check the specific fare, operating flight and upgrade product before paying more for an “upgradeable” ticket.

Qantas: start with the fare and flight

Qantas Classic Upgrade Rewards have their own eligibility and priority rules. International economy classes E, N, O and Q are ordinarily excluded, although specific promotions can differ. A worked domestic example

For a qualifying flight in the published 0–600 mile band, a discount economy upgrade to Business is 12,500 Qantas Points; flexible economy is 6,200. Those different amounts come from the upgrade table, not from the difference between economy and business reward tickets. Qantas upgrade table.

Suppose the flexible cash fare costs A$200 more. Paying A$200 to save 6,300 points values those saved points at about 3.17 cents each. That comparison does not include any extra flexibility you actually need, and it does not guarantee either request succeeds. Use your own realistic fare quotes rather than these hypothetical cash amounts.

Velocity is a separate check

Virgin Australia points upgrades use their own eligible fare, route and ticketing conditions, including specific rules for Australia–Doha services. Compare three possible outcomes

Status may affect request priority, but it is not a published probability of success. A premium seat showing for cash sale does not establish upgrade inventory. Keep plans workable in the purchased cabin and avoid making non-refundable arrangements that depend on an upgrade clearing.

Before departure

Check the request status and the program’s deadline. If your itinerary changes, confirm whether the request carries over or must be made again.
