Hotel points in Australia: which programs are worth it

Hotel points are usually simpler than airline miles — but the programs differ in one way that decides whether they're worth collecting: do they publish a fixed chart, or price award nights dynamically? Here's how to think about hotel loyalty as an Australian traveller.

Fixed chart vs dynamic — same split as flights

  • Fixed (category) programs publish a points-per-night chart by category. World of Hyatt is the standout: Categories 1–8 with off-peak / standard / peak pricing, so you can plan a redemption in advance and spot genuine value. Wyndham Rewards also uses a small set of fixed tiers.
  • Dynamic programsMarriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, IHG One Rewards, Accor ALL and Choice — move the points price with the cash rate. There's no chart to plan around, so the right move is to compare points vs cash on the specific night.

See where each program sits, and its pricing model, on the hotels page. Then check any night with the hotel points vs cash tool.

What matters in Australia

  • Accor (ALL) has by far the biggest footprint across Australia and the Pacific — Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure and ibis are everywhere. Its points carry a fixed cash value (you redeem them as a discount), which makes the value easy to understand but caps the upside.
  • Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Hyatt all have a presence in the major cities; Hyatt is smaller but its fixed chart can deliver the best value when a property's cash rate is high.

How hotel points behave

A few quirks worth knowing:

  • Reward-night perks add value. Hilton gives a fifth-night-free on standard rewards; IHG gives a fourth-night-free for members — effectively a discount on longer stays.
  • Hotel points are usually worth less per point than airline miles (often under a cent), so a big-looking balance may be worth less than you think. The points value calculator works for hotels too.
  • Earning comes mainly from paid stays, co-branded cards and transferable bank points. Some flexible currencies transfer to hotel programs — see transfers.

The bottom line

If you want plannable value, a fixed-chart program (Hyatt) rewards the effort. If you mostly want convenience and coverage in Australia, a big dynamic program (Accor, Marriott, Hilton) keeps things simple. Either way, compare points against the cash rate before you redeem.
