Choose your arrival and departure separately

Find an airline, then a booking program

For Qantas Points, start with the program's Classic Flight Reward search information. For other currencies, check their eligible partners and actual inventory. JAL's oneworld total-itinerary award table is not a universal one-way Japan price.
An open-jaw worked example
Suppose a hypothetical return through Tokyo costs 100,000 points and $250 cash. Returning from Osaka costs 110,000 points and $270, but avoids $180 of transport back to Tokyo. The extra 10,000 points save $160 net and may also save travel time. This is a decision example, not a current fare.
Use trip value to value the difference and the planner to keep NRT distinct from HND. Record both directions and all travellers.
Check before ticketing
Inspect each flight's operating airline and cabin. Confirm enough seats together and any airport changes. For a separate onward ticket, check baggage and missed-connection consequences rather than assuming protection.
