Set a flexible destination brief
Choose the cities you actually want to visit and whether an open-jaw trip would help: for example, arrive in London and return from Paris. Compare the cost and time of travelling between them. A cheaper award into another country is not automatically cheaper once hotels and ground transport are included.

Compare total trip cost
A hypothetical option at 150,000 miles plus $1,000 cash is not directly comparable with 180,000 points plus $350 in another currency. First convert both into the flexible currency you hold, then account for fees and any extra nights. Use transfer paths and trip value.
Avoid assuming the return costs the same. An inbound journey can have different available carriers and charges. Enter each quote separately in the planner.
Check the overnight sectors
Open the flight details and verify business on each long leg. A result may contain an economy connection; decide whether that is acceptable and retain the breakdown. Also check lounge entitlement, baggage and seating for companions rather than inferring them from the word business.

Finish before moving points
Confirm enough seats for the party, the issuing program's change rules, transfer timing and the final cash total. Save a fallback date or acceptable cabin. The useful result is a ticketed, workable Europe trip, not a collection of individually attractive sectors that cannot be issued together.
