Separate a voluntary change from disruption
If you change your mind, start with the fare's voluntary change or cancellation rules. If the airline cancels or materially changes a flight, check the disruption options before cancelling it yourself. These are different processes.
For example, Qantas Frequent Flyer terms include specific Classic Flight Reward provisions for airline cancellations. Do not apply those provisions to another program or assume every schedule change triggers the same result. This guide is a booking worksheet, not a determination of your legal rights.
Complete this checklist before accepting a refund

Contact the program or agent that issued the award first. The operating airline may handle day-of-travel disruption, but cannot necessarily redeposit another program's points.
Compare changing and cancelling
A hypothetical change might cost 5,000 points and $50; cancelling and rebooking might cost 8,000 points plus a newly higher award price. Those numbers are not published fees. They illustrate why both options need a complete quote.
Do not cancel a useful ticket solely because another search result looks available. Establish the replacement's conditions, funding and ticketing process first. A cancelled seat need not return to award inventory for you or anybody else.
Keep an audit trail
Save the original ticket, applicable conditions, change notification and case number. Record the promised points and cash return separately and check both accounts afterwards. Do not assume the original bank transfer reverses when airline miles are refunded.

If you cannot travel, contact the issuing party before the stated deadline. A no-show can affect later flights on the same ticket. After any refund, update your expiry plan and saved itinerary.
