An airline alliance is a network of participating airlines. It can support earning, reward bookings and status benefits across members, but each of those relationships has its own conditions. Alliance membership does not mean all seats, fares or lounges are available to every member.

Three relationships to distinguish

A codeshare adds another layer. The code on your ticket identifies the marketing carrier; the airline flying the aircraft is the operator. Use both when checking a benefit. A flight carrying a partner's number can still have exclusions.
Use official membership lists
oneworld's member directory is the reference for its membership. Our alliance pages organise the site's program records, with dates and links for further checking. A bilateral partner relationship can be useful even where the airlines are in different alliances or one is independent.
Do not assume a bank balance can transfer between alliance programs. For example, holding points in two oneworld programs does not make them a single wallet. A transfer requires its own documented relationship.
A paid-flight example
Imagine a ticket sold under Airline A's code, flown by Airline B, in booking class K. To credit it to Program C, look up C's rule for that exact combination. The cabin name 'economy' is not enough: booking classes can earn different amounts or nothing. Keep the ticket and boarding pass until credit posts.

Lounge access is a separate check
oneworld's lounge policy includes tier, cabin, flight and lounge exceptions. Status alone does not promise access to every branded premium lounge. Guest rules and the guest's travel also matter.
Try the lounge checker, then confirm the specific lounge and airport on the operator's page. If the tool flags an exception, it has not granted access.
Apply this to a points booking
Choose the operating flight you want, identify programs allowed to book it, then compare the actual quotes and ways to earn their points. Start in the trip planner; an alliance is a useful research filter, not a completed booking strategy.
