Choose where a paid flight earns

For a Qantas fare, find the booking-class letter and check American's Qantas earning table. The rate depends on the route and class; an AA flight number operated by Qantas follows the American earning rules instead. American excludes Qantas codeshares operated by Jetstar from AAdvantage earning and redemption.

For example, American lists a 50% base-mile rate for an eligible Qantas H-class fare. If the credited distance were 1,000 miles, that would mean 500 base miles before any applicable status bonus. This is a calculation example, not a quoted flight distance. Check the table for your actual ticket.

Compare that with what the same flight would earn in the program you already use. American's terms generally prevent earning in two programs for the same flight, and the selection cannot be changed after departure. Keep the ticket and boarding pass until the chosen account shows the credit.

For non-flight earning, compare a hotel's cash price, cancellation terms and loyalty benefits before choosing an airline-mile offer. Marriott has a published Bonvoy-to-airline transfer option; compare the hotel nights you would give up before converting. Partner airline does not mean the same award price

American's partner award list includes oneworld airlines such as Qantas, Japan Airlines and Qatar Airways, alongside other partners such as Etihad. A bilateral partner's inclusion does not make it a oneworld member. Read the oneworld guide for the alliance distinction.

For a partner award departing Australia, start with the South Pacific region in American's chart and read the routing notes. The chart is a planning reference: some journeys require more than one award, and the final itinerary must be accepted by American. Avoid adding together attractive one-sector prices and assuming the combination is ticketable.

American's own-flight awards vary by flight and date. Its advertised starting prices are not a universal Australia-to-USA fare. For either product, inspect the complete cash component and the cabin on each sector. A domestic connection in economy should be visible in your comparison of a long-haul business-class trip.

Search and book from Australia

American's booking help confirms that many partner awards can be searched and booked on aa.com or its app. A partner booking is not automatically a telephone-only booking.

1. Search using miles for the origin, destination, dates and number of travellers you actually need. Check adjacent dates if your plans allow it.
2. Inspect every sector, including the operating airline, cabin, connections and overnight stops. Confirm that the result has enough seats for the whole party.
3. Record the total miles and cash charges. Compare a suitable cash ticket and any alternative program balance you already hold.
4. Before buying or converting points, confirm that the award can be ticketed. If a hold is offered, record its exact expiry; do not assume a standard hold is available.
5. Review names, dates and payment details, then complete the booking when ready. Keep the ticket number as well as the reservation reference.

Buying miles: calculate the Australian-dollar cost

Open the official buy-miles flow for your account's price and eligibility. Check the total after taxes, any promotion, the remaining annual allowance and the currency charged. A percentage discount is not enough information to judge the purchase.

American's purchase FAQ says ordinary personal purchases and gifts share a 300,000-mile annual limit, subject to change, and purchased miles can take up to four hours to arrive. Transactions are non-refundable. They do not count towards status qualification.

Add the award's taxes and charges to that purchase cost. If you are topping up an existing balance, include the value of the miles already held when comparing the award with a cash ticket. An apparently cheap top-up can conceal an expensive redemption.

Check the seat again before paying. A purchase confirmation does not reserve the award, and a cancellation of the flight award does not reverse the separate miles purchase. The points-value calculator can compare a complete cash alternative with the miles and charges.

Expiry, changes and cancellations

Under the membership FAQ, qualifying earning or redemption activity generally extends unexpired miles for 24 months. Members under 21 have an exception when their profile contains a valid birth date; qualifying primary cardholders also have a separate exception. Check the expiry date in your own account rather than assuming an Australian card provides that protection.

American's award-cancellation help allows miles to be reinstated without a fee when the conditions are met, including cancelling before the first flight departs and within the stated ticket-validity window. Eligible taxes are refunded, with exceptions. Partner itineraries may need Reservations assistance. Read the rules for the ticket you are buying before relying on a refund.

Keep the account contact details current and record when your next qualifying activity is due. If you rarely earn AAdvantage miles, that maintenance is part of deciding whether the program suits your travel.
